“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭NIV‬‬
In the summer months I was on my bike pretty much every day headed to play with numerous friends I had in the neighborhood. With Terrance being so close, he and I played a lot of basketball, just he and I. Mainly my driveway was where we would hoop -- we shot a ton of jump shots, played a lot of 21, and battled it out 1 on 1. Terrance had impressive size, eventually he would grow to only about 6’1”, but growing up he was always a little bit taller than everyone it seemed. His frame was thick which made strong as an ox, still he was amazingly nimble. His crossover was Tim Hardawayesque – he would keep it low, rock you with the head and shoulder movement, bring it back quick and blow by you before you even knew what happened. What drew me to him was how quiet he was, naturally I’m pretty shy myself, so we were a lot alike in that we could really let go and express who we truly were out on the basketball court. He and I of all the friends I grew up with in my neighborhood were the only ones to play ball together all through high school. My junior year his senior year, 2003, was a special year for Kokomo boys basketball. We went 17-3 on the season, winning a sectional championship against a tough Lafayette Jeff team that contained a guy named Dustin Keller. Terrance had an incredible season, contributing with his ability to get to the bucket and finish strong with smooth finger roll layups; wasn’t his strongest point but he’d even knock down an occasional mid-range jump shot. Where he really made his money was on the defensive end of the floor. There weren’t too many people that could get past him… Come to think of it he was sort of like the Draymond Green of the team. His role, as deceivingly small as it may have seemed from the outside looking in was probably the largest because he did it all. He was always a brilliant mind graduating with an engineering degree from Purdue, eventually attaining a Harvard business degree. He lives in the eastern part of the U.S. living the dream with a wife and two beautiful kids. Although we don’t see or hear from each other often, I’m so proud to call him my friend. #jcbarnettschoolofjumpshooting #jump #shooting #shot #hoops
