Why Screen for Depression? Clinical depression is a serious medical illness. Clinical depression can lead to suicide. Sometimes people with depression mistakenly believe that the symptoms of depression are a "normal part of life." Clinical depression affects men and women of all ages, races and socioeconomic groups. Only about a third (35.3%) of those suffering from severe depression seek treatment from a mental health professional.[2] Depression can co-occur and complicate other medical conditions. Screenings are often the first step in getting help. 🌿Listen . A simple action that so many of us struggle with. We hear what we want to hear or we anticipate what the other is going to say. Sometimes listening - with zero judgment or advice - is the most important thing we can do. . This week is Mental Illness Awareness Week and today is National Depression Screening Day. . Before I was diagnosed with #GAD and #depression, I didn't listen. I didn't see all the mostly hidden signs because I didn't fit the stereotype of a depressed person. But if I had listened more closely to my irritability, my irrational thoughts when things didn't go my way, my harsh inner critic who told me I was worthless and would never be smart, good, talented enough, I might have gotten help sooner. . If you or a loved one is struggling and you think it might be deeper than everyday stress or sadness, reach out. Get screened. Make an appointment with a #therapist or your family doctor. You deserve help. 🌷

Today is National Depression Screening Day, held annually during Mental Illness Awareness Week in October. National Depression Screening Day is an annual campaign that raises awareness about mood disorders, such as depression, and provides the public with free, anonymous mental health screenings at helpyourselfhelpothers.org. This year, the campaign will focus on suicide prevention. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the suicide rate in the United States increased 24 percent from 1999 to 2014, making it the highest it has been in decades. In response, Screening for Mental Health developed stopasuicide.org, a resource that provides the public with information on the warning signs of suicide and the action steps to take to save a life. We believe that everyone has the power to reduce the suicide rate by speaking about suicide, knowing how to respond when they notice the warning signs, and taking action to get someone the help they need.
