On this day in 1986, Picasso’s Weeping Woman was found in a locker at Spencer Street Train Station. The painting had been stolen from the National Gallery of Victoria on the weekend of August 2-3. The theft was discovered on Monday, August 4 when a group identifying itself as the Australian Cultural Terrorists sent ransom letters to the Victorian Minister for the Arts, The Age and other media outlets. The group threatened to burn the painting on August 9 unless the Victorian state government met their demands. These included an increase in arts funding by 10 per cent in real terms over three years and the establishment of a $25,000 annual art prize called the Picasso Ransom. In this photo from the archives, Patrick McCaughey, the director of the NGV, is pictured with the recovered painting. Thankfully, it was found undamaged, wrapped in brown paper and tied neatly with string. 📷Len Lamb #Onthisday #Fromthearchives #Melbourne #NGV #Picasso #Art
