Ketosis is a state our bodies enter during starvation, low carbohydrate intake, low food intake and intense exercise. Many people are now following the ketogenic way of eating. This involves reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing fat intake (hopefully the majority being healthy fats of course). When our body enters ketosis, we begin to create an energy yielding substance called Ketones. They are produce by the liver from fatty acids. Breakdown of fat for fuel is a natural process for our bodies. However those with diabetes could have more ketones in their blood due to the lack of insulin production. Which could lead to other implications if it gets too high. So this needs to be monitored, but is possible for someone diabetic. People who are not diabetic requires a reduction of glucose (i.e. carbohydrates) to minimize insulin and other pancreatic hormones, that would otherwise prevent ketone development. Keeping protein intake moderate is key for ketogenic, because if it gets to high our body will create glucose through the amino acids. So if your planning on trying out the ketogenic way of eating, I would truly study your body and assess whether it's something you can adhere to.
