Maarten Spruyt is an art director, stylist and exhibition designer. Working in collaboration with his life time partner Reli Wajnberg, the two explore the relationship between freedom, the sensation of being free, and its consequences of privacy, exposure, and vulnerability. Spruyt and Wajnberg feel it’s essential for people to choose to colour the world, to not be afraid of rejecting conformity and camouflage. Freedom is a feeling that comes from the inside, when wearing the Universal Kimono it doesn’t matter which way the wind blows, your identity will always remain anonymous’. Photographer Barrie Hullegie visualized our Universal Kimono with an intimate portrait of his loved ones at sea, where the wrapped kimono evokes the feeling of protection and safety. Hullegie is known for his up close, personal and often poetic portraits. By capturing this mother and child facing the horizon, he shows the importance of protecting our Human Rights for the future of our generations to come. Many thanks @barrie_hullegie 🎨💙🏳‍🌈👘🎭 #universalkimono #freedom #equality #security #kimonoontour #70yrsuniversaldeclarationofhumanrights #freedom #longingdistance
Heads part 9 / strike a pose. I’m wearing a sculpted clay piece by @e.vannoort as a mask, to accompany th wondrful univrsal kimono by @roosjeklap. . . . The kimono’s graphic design shows typography with text of the universal declaration of human rights. For this project Roosje asked different photographers and artists to make a new image with the kimono. The kimono colors reminded me of the colors and graphic theme of the book for the exhibition ‘The Family of Man’, curated by Edward Steichen in 1955. Using a mask I transform myself into a personification of humanity in a universal and theatrical way. The hands begging upwards, with its’ bent wrists towards the sky is a reference to the Zadkine monument in Rotterdam. Many thanks # ✨💫 . . . #universalkimono #freedom #equality #security #kimonoontour #diversity #70yrsuniversaldeclarationofhumanrights #thefamilyofman #Zadkine #koenhauser #imagesorcerer #photography #photomagic #imagination #magician #photomagician #style #sculpturalform #sculptural #sculpture #fashionphotography #fashion #e.vannoort
Koen Hauser is the next artist to have worked with our Universal Kimono. His intangible body of work flows between fine arts, fashion and applied photography. As an image sorcerer he transforms technique into emotion, the spectacle into mystery. For this photo, Hauser was inspired by the colors and theme of the book for the exhibition ‘The Family of Man’, curated by Moma’s Edward Steichen in 1955. He had then put on the mask to symbolize humanity in a universal and theatrical way. The hands begging upwards, with its’ bent wrists towards the sky is a reference to the Zadkine monument in Rotterdam. Our project 'The Universal Kimono' celebrates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights all year and is captured here by Petrovsky&Ramone with a model jumping in a skate pool, floating in mid-air. As the photographers said 'there are no rules in skateboarding', this photo represents a beautiful sense of freedom, independence, creativity and unity and therefore the universal human rights. Petrovsky&Ramone have used Arabia, Africa, Europe and the United States as the décor for their staged work, which captures a unique, raw and eccentric yet elegant world full of atmosphere that is caught in a participating and almost documentary style. UNIVERSAL KIMONO strikes again! Photographer Viviane Sassen took our Universal Kimono on tour to Jaipur in India and photographed model Radhika Nair with pigments that represent colors in the kimono itself. “A photograph can be judged on different grounds: on political, social, emotional, but also on personal grounds.” The pigments in the picture refer to the world- famous Holi festival; the festival of color, that is celebrated in India annually. Sassens’ work is known for its’ geometric shapes and abstraction of the body, often intertwined. Photographer Carmen Kemmink @carmenkemmink captured beautiful and talented singer-songwriter Naaz in The Universal Kimono. Having a Kurdish background, it took Naaz quite some time and effort to convince her family to allow her to follow her passion. During that time, Naaz taught herself to write, produce and record her own quirky and playful music, so she could still be able to make music regardless of any circumstances. Now with her family lovingly by her side, she wholeheartedly encourages other artists to do the same and never give up on their dreams. We could not have wished for a better kick off of the Universal Kimono On Tour <3 @bitsofnaaz #universalkimono #freedom #equality #security #kimonoontour #70yrsuniversaldeclarationofhumanrights The Universal Kimono is a project by @arkamsterdam

It's been a clever trick to drop USB sticks in parking lots of unsuspecting businesses in order to spread computer viruses. In 2010 the virus ‘Stuxnet’ was discovered, that had been spread in this way and proved to be one of the most sophisticated computer attacks ever seen: it sprawled itself to millions of machines around the world, which ultimately disrupted uranium centrifuges at Iran’s nearby nuclear facility in Natanz. Artist duo Prins Klap took the Universal Kimono on their trip to Iran last week, and photographed the separate Universal Kimono flags wearing a Cloud Suit on the parking lot in the area where the Stuxnet USB sticks were left behind. #universalkimono #freedom #equality #security #cybersecurity #cyberwar #kimonoontour #70yrsuniversaldeclarationofhumanrights thanks to @milo for the photograph 🇮🇷 @typojanchi 🇰🇷 The Universal Kimono is a project by @roosjeklap and @paulinelpape

EQUALITY: the Universal Kimono at the 5th @typojanchi 2017 International Typography Biennale in Seoul / 5회 타이포잔치, 2017 국제타이포그래피 비엔날레의 공식 인스타그램 계정입니다 While digital technology and social networks have drastically changed our lives: private and public merge under the influence of our new globalized connections, but the gap in equality, security, wealth and threat for personal freedom and privacy are under scrutiny. For Typojanchi 2017 we have created a make-your-own kimono pattern divided over the three flags, which together form the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). Almost seventy years ago, this important treaty was put together by he United Nations General Assembly, which necessity had risen directly from the experience of the two World Wars. The "kimono", which actually means a "thing to wear" (ki "wear" and mono "thing”) is used here to embody and adopt the Four Freedoms—freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from fear, and freedom from want—as basic aim of the free self, and is empowered by the fact that you have to make it yourself. By wearing the 30 articles, one embodies the right to live, show dignity and worth of other humans and promotes a universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion. We have made the design of ‘The Universal Kimono’ available under Creative Commons.
