It is very common to see an excessive amount of arching in the low back during both deadlift variations and even Olympic weightlifting movements. A lot of athletes are told to “arch hard” while they’re learning weightlifting and this is just not a good idea for keeping a healthy spine. Instead, athletes should be taught to brace well and use their hips and hamstrings as prime movers instead of their low back muscles. . Two exercises that can help solve this are a RDL with a PVC pipe in front of you instead of behind. People with this issue will tend to let the third point of contact at the groin separate which is a sign of low back arching. . The other exercise is with a band tied up above you that you hold as you go into an RDL. The band forces you to arch more and gives you an external cue of something to brace down against.
