Chiropractic & functional medicine go hand and hand! Every single cell, organ, and tissue in your body needs two things: a well functioning nerve supply and a badass blood supply. • Nerves carry messages from one area of the body to the other, while blood carries vital nutrients and oxygen. Ya can’t really have one without the other...SO if you want to be the healthiest you can be get adjusted and optimize that blood chem! • • • #functionalmedicine #functionalnutrition #health #wellness #chiropractic #getadjusted #nutrition #ellisvillemo

Statin drugs, the drug used to lower cholesterol, are designed to inhibit the action of HMG-CoA reductase artificially at the costly expense of depleting the body’s own reserves of the coenzyme CoQ10. • CoQ10 may be the single most important nutrient for the functioning of the heart. It’s an endogenous antioxidant and plays a vital role in energy production and mitochondrial functioning. • It helps us generate ATP to power all our cells, organs, and tissues in our body. Without it, muscle contraction wouldn’t occur. • Deficiencies of CoQ10 have been linked to heart failure and high blood pressure...and idk about you but I love my heart ❤️ so if I were on a statin you can guarantee I’d be replenishing my CoQ10 stores. • So if you’re on a statin drug, talk to your doc about CoQ10 supplementation. • If you’re looking for natural alternatives to lowering your cholesterol without medication, I’d be happy to help. DM me if you have any questions or if you are interested in getting to the root cause of your high cholesterol. • • #functionalmedicine #functionalnutrition #holistichealing #chiropractic #health #cholesterol #naturalhealing #ellisvillemo
If you’re in my office and we’re ordering blood work, you can bet that we’re looking at your thyroid physiology. • Your thyroid hormone is your chief metabolic hormone. It literally helps the body make energy, regulate temperature, and assists other organs in their functions. So basically, If it ain’t functioning.. you ain’t functioning. • A typical thyroid panel in my world consists of TSH, Total and free T3 and T4, T3 uptake, reverse T3, and TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies. All of these guys are needed to see the big picture of what’s going on. Some docs solely look at TSH and T4, but that’s like putting together a 10 piece puzzle with only 2 pieces... impossible. But to each their own. Everyone’s gotta do what they gotta do. • Anyways.. back to cholesterol. Thyroid hormone plays a big role in the mobilization and utilization of cholesterol, so if our thyroid hormone levels are suboptimal it can affect how our body utilizes cholesterol ultimately affecting our cholesterol parameters. • The biggest contributor I’ve seen in patients is what us functional docs refer to as a physiological tendency of thyroid hormone under-conversion. So it is not a problem with the patient’s thyroid gland’s ability to produce thyroid hormone, but rather their ability to convert T4 (inactive form) to T3 (the body’s active form). This can be caused by undereating/starvation (which makes sense bc if we’re starving our body doesn’t want to be metabolically active), inflammation, stress, and nutrient deficiencies. • Just an example of high cholesterol being a result of something else. • • #functionalmedicine #functionalnutrition #health #holistichealth #ellisvillemo #cholesterol #thyroidhormone #paleo #antiinflammatory #chiropractic
Most people who tell me they have high cholesterol also tell me they are trying to make dietary and lifestyle changes to affect those parameters...which is AWESOME 👏🏼. However, the change in their diets usually revolves around implementing a low cholesterol and low fat diet when it should be geared to a low carbohydrate, low sugar diet with minimal processed foods. Here’s why. • Most of the cholesterol from food is not absorbed by our body, but is preferentially passed in the stool. So it’s unlikely those egg yolks you’ve been eating are the reason your cholesterol is high. • But listen to this.. insulin released in response to sugar and carb ingestion stimulates the enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) to produce EXCESS cholesterol. Wow would ya look at that.. who woulda thought😏 Now, you can thank the good lord upstairs that you can start eating those whole egg omelets again🙌🏼 • When I look at blood work, you can bet your bottom dollar that I’m also looking at triglycerides in addition to total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL. Why? Because triglycerides are one of the first markers to be elevated in insulin resistance, and triglycerides go high as the body attempts to optimize blood sugar levels (because the body has to shift elevated glucose into triglycerides). • I don’t know what your doc is looking for, but if your triglycerides are over 100, it almost always suggests a physiological trend to a diet high in sugar, carbs, and processed foods. So if you’re in my office, we will most definitely be chattin’ about that 😏 • • • #functionalmedicine #functionalnutrition #holistichealing #holistichealth #healthyliving #healthylifestyle #paleo #cholesterol #ellisvillemo
Oh, cholesterol. A topic that confuses so many. When it comes to cholesterol, we’ve been taught to believe this guy is nothing but bad news.. which is a darn shame if ya ask me. And quite frankly seems foolish.. Here’s why. • 80% of your cholesterol is made by your liver, while only 20% is obtained from dietary cholesterol..which should make us realize how important cholesterol is to our body’s functioning. If it didn’t serve a purpose.. why would our body make it 🤔🤔 • Cholesterol is important for many metabolic processes including digestion, sex hormone synthesis, brain health, and more. • If your cholesterol has been sky rocket high, you should start asking yourself why your body is producing it in excess or absorbing so much... because let’s be real. Your body ain’t stupid. So there’s obviously a reason to the high cholesterol madness. • The cause for high cholesterol in one person is not always the same as the cause for another, which is why you have to look at the whole picture with each patient. • Over the course of the next few posts, I’ll let ya in on a few things I see in most patients and what I’m looking out for when it comes to cholesterol. • Also, let it be known that looking at total cholesterol by itself really tells us nothing... except that you have high cholesterol. You’ve got high cholesterol? Ok. Cool. Why is your cholesterol high? • It’s all about patterns and trends. We should be looking at total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, and total cholesterol/HDL ratio, as well as inflammatory markers like hsCRP and homocysteine, and of course that thyroid panel. If your doc isn’t looking at the whole picture, then that’s a problem. • • • #functionalmedicine #functionalnutrition #chiropractic #health #healthyliving #paleo #cholesterol #ellisvillemo
