#throwbackthursday to when our member Dan smashed his first tough mudder! Day1 - getting up and down from the floor was a struggle. 18 months later - tough mudder smashed. This year? I’ve given Dan the task of doing a half marathon. I asked Dan in December about making another goal that scares the hell out of him for 2019. He suggested a 10km race. So I pushed it up to a half marathon. The more uncomfortable you get, the quicker you hit your goals. The thing I focus on most with all whom I coach - NEVER put a limit on yourself. Day 17: calories and macronutrients Put simply, a calorie is a unit energy - (the heat energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg water by 1degree Celsius); the amount of energy in food. . Food is also made up of 3 main macronutrients: Protein: per gram = 4kcals Carbohydrates: per gram = 4kcals Fats: per gram = 9kcals . So, whatever you eat will have a breakdown of the above in different quantities depending on the food. . It’s so important to have an awareness of the foods you’re eating, and the amount of carbs/fats/protein within those foods. . This is why, if you consume more calories than you burn, you’ll gain weight; and if you consume less than you burn, you’ll lose weight👌🏻 . It’s also why any ‘diet’ will work if adhered to: Say you go low carb, and you used to eat a carb heavy diet, chances are you aren’t replacing those foods, or you’re replacing them with a much lower calorie alternative (such as courgetti instead of pasta) so you’re in a calorie deficit = weight loss. It’s NOT because carbs are evil and cause you to gain fat. . We all have different calorie needs so I’m not going to say how many calories to consume, or the specific breakdown of the macronutrients, but I would encourage you to familiarise yourself with foods and their macronutrient content. . From here, you can make changes; could you benefit from increasing protein intake? Vary your carbohydrate sources? Adding in more good quality fats? Do you need more veggies? . Unsure of your food intake? Want to gain/lose weight, or understand nutrition and improve your health? Then keep a food diary for 2 weeks of everything you consume, and assess what you’re eating and where you can make changes! . Be aware, don’t fall for diet foods; just because something is low calorie or low fat, doesn’t always mean it’s better for you. Focus instead on the quality of the foods you eat, but be mindful of the quantity. Whilst calories matter, so do macronutrients, micronutrients, fibre, satiation, enjoyment 💫
