"He'd fly through the air with the greatest of ease, that daring young man on the flying trapeze" Yesterday I watched Frank Capra's romantic comedy "It Happened One Night" (1934) again and enjoyed it so much! Those Pre-Code Hollywood movies are just such a delight. Even though they've been made more than 80 years ago they are still very fresh, funny and joyous. 1934 was a very good year with "The Thin Man" being another favourite. Just like another classic Casablanca its success came quite unexpectedly. Columbia Pictures had a "Povery Row" reputation that mainly made low budget B movies. At the prestigious Hollywood studio MGM they were jokingly referred to as Siberia since Louis B. Mayer would loan out actors to Columbia as a way of punishment if they misbehaved. The story goes that Clark Gable was sent to Columbia for sleeping around with Joan Crawford against Mayer's wishes yet another story is that he asked too much money. Either way Gable was not happy and showed his discontent and disdain by showing up drunk at Capra's office during their first meeting and made some jokes. Paramount star Claudette Colbert had a previous bad experience with Capra and only accepted the role because of the huge pay check. After filming she said: "I just finished the worst picture in the world". With little faith in the movie and her chance to win an Oscar she booked a train ticket on the day of the 7th Academy Awards which were held at The Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on February 27, 1935 and did not attend the presentation. After the announcement that she had won officials rushed to the train station to bring her to the ceremony. The movie would win all five major Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, making it the first movie in history to perform a "clean sweep". It would take 40 years for the next movie to accomplish that which was the 1975 "One Few Over the Cuckoos Nest". #clarkgable #claudettecolbert #ithappenedonenight #oscar #columbiapictures #hollywood #movie #moviestars #icon #moviestar #classicmovie #frankcapra #hollywoodstar #hollywoodstars #silverscreen #goldenageofhollywood #elegance #glamour #style #mgm #stylish
