Yoga for me is so good for lengthening tight muscles, especially with all the rehab weights that I’ve been doing lately, is also great for building up upper body strength because you spend so much time on your hands, helps open up the chest, works the often underused but so important stabilising muscles and promotes movement in my spine. Welcome to week 17 of #pilatesphysio ! Every Monday, I will translate directly to one of the pilates apparatus a non-pilates rehab exercise highlighted by Anna @physiotherapystockholm !💪🏼 • In this week’s exercise, focus continues on shoulder strength. • Did you known that weakness or dysfunction of the glutes can actually be related to your shoulder pain?? • This is because the latissimus of the affected shoulder work together with the opposite side glutes in what is called the Posterior Oblique Sling (POS). The POS is involved in most all reciprocal movements of the body (i.e. walking, running, power movements such as throwing). It also functions to tense the thoracolumbar fascia, which in turn aids to stabilize the lower back and pelvis. • The unilateral Bent-Over Row is a favorite exercise of us both. This exercise directly stimulates the POS, traps, rhomboids and muscles of the rotator cuff - all of which are essential for stabilizing the shoulder, maintaining proper posture and providing both strength, stability and power for the entire upper body. 👉🏼 There are many ways to row using Pilates equipment. I find this version is the safest and most similar for today. 👉🏼Cadillac setup: Light arm springs with crossbar fairly high. 🔹Begin kneeling on one knee, using glutes to pull front hip back and down and hamstrings press bottom hip forward and up. Spine is neutral with abdominals engaged. 🔹Hold handle in hand opposite to front leg. Open and widen collarbone to avoid rounding of upper back. 🔹Allow shoulder to first protract forward; then glide shoulderblade back and down toward midback, pulling arm ’up and into’ joint - this is also known as ’packing’ the joint. Perform 6-8 reps to prime correct movement. 🔹Continue movement by pulling elbow straight back - feel here that the shoulderblade is initiating the movement. Extend arm back to start, controlling the movement. 👉🏼 Avoid rotating by staying grounded through the front leg and maintaining hip, glute and abdominal stabilization. 🔺Disclaimer: These posts are not meant to be diagnostic in nature, or to be done instead of seeking help from a certified physiotherapist.
