Life After NICU 👼🏽✨ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I wasn’t supposed to be able to have children. I have endometriosis and only one functioning ovary. In July of 2017 my husband and I were shocked to find out we were expecting. Excitement soon turned to worry about what would happen when we found out I had an incompetent cervix. It started shrinking at 21 weeks and made no changes again until 23 weeks which was too late for a cerclage. So I was hospitalized for a weekend, went through my first round of steroids and magnesium and given a pesseray. Which in so few words looks like a tub stopper. Wasn’t comfortable at all but anything to keep me pregnant. I went home and was placed on bedrest. At 24 weeks I woke up at 3am and didn’t feel quite right. Woke up my husband and off to the ER we went. I was 3cm dilated and 75% effaced. So bad in the hospital I went. 2nd round of steroids and mag. Pessary removed and hospital bedrest is where I remained until he arrived. We hoped for at least 30 weeks but didn’t make it. At 25 weeks and 4 days I had a placental abruption/hemorrhage and he was taken via emergency c-section. I was scared but had faith in God and our team of docs that everything would be okay. A dose of surfactant, intubation, nippv, cpap, high and low flow cannula, picc lines, IVs, transfusions, and watching him grow outside of me was a roller coaster ride. He was 1lb 14oz and 12” long. We just came home this past Monday and he’s 6lbs 1oz and 38 weeks gestation. Still haven’t hit his due date yet (Feb 26th) He’s an amazing lil dude! We are infinitely and wonderfully blessed to have a happy, healthy, micro Preemie. Here’s a pic. Life after NICU 👼🏽✨ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Maximus was so tiny and so fragile but had the strongest heart for the biggest battles up ahead. Max's small intestine took a bad turn and he developed the number one reason for Preemie deaths, Nectrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). This disease was devastating and complicated every system in Max's tiny body. Because of NEC, our Gladiator completed 297 days of countless rounds of battles in the NICU/Med Surg. Because of NEC, Max was not able to tolerate feedings and he still continues to have severe oral aversion and depends on his G-tube for nutrition. Because of NEC, Max was on a high flow oscillator for too long which caused him to have ROP and needed eye surgery. Because of NEC it damaged his left ureter so we have to catheterize his left kidney everyday. Because of NEC he had an ileostomy and a wound vac to his abdomen. Because of NEC he developed the painful and very dangerous compartment syndrome. Because of NEC my son is diagnosed "short gut" and have difficulty gaining weight. Because of NEC my son is tiny but mighty. NEC brought us so much heartbreak but brought us so many kind hearted and supportive people along the way whom we are so #thankful for and now call family. Our Gladiator fought with all his guts and survived! I am so #grateful for Maximus' "Gladiator strength" and for our Rady's NICU family for not only saving Our Gladiator's life numerous times but for making our lives a whole lot better for it! Thank you God for blessing us with Max's miraculous life! We are so obsess with this boy and will continue to give him all that life has to offer! Mommy, Daddy & this World loves you and all your guts!” #gladiatorinthenicu #maximusgene #MaxONEthebattle ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #perfectpreemie #preemiebabies #nicu #nicubabymiracle #preemiemom #preemiedad #nicugrad #preemiesupportandawareness #preemielove #preemiepower #toronto #preemielove #preemiecommunity #preemiefighter #preemieblog
Life after NICU 👼🏽✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “I had just gotten out of the shower around 10pm on June 9, 2017 sweating profusely and balled up in a fetal position. My husband suggested we go to the hospital because I looked like I was in labor. After about an hour of convincing I finally agreed. When they the nurse took my blood pressure it was 210/185 hand I was spilling protein in my urine. How could this be? - I had an appointment earlier and the doctor had no concerns. At this point, I started to panic when they told me they needed to do an emergency c-section. On June 10, 2017 at 27 weeks I gave birth to Carmen. She only weighed 1 lb 11oz. Although, the NICU doctors explained she had 50/50 chance of living and if she survived she would health and behavior issues- I was still hopeful my baby girl was going to prove them wrong. For 92 days she stayed in the NICU! Carmen had 7 blood transfusions, NEC for 21 days, stopped breathing for two minutes and had digestive issues which prevented her from having bowel movements and eating. Today, a few days short of eight months she does not have any health issues. We are not totally of out of the clear she will still be seen by a gi specialist until she is one years old. I am truly glad I had the support of my husband, family and friends through this journey.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #perfectpreemie #preemiebabies #nicu #nicubabymiracle #preemiemom #preemiedad #nicugrad #preemiesupportandawareness #preemielove #preemiepower #toronto #preemielove #preemiecommunity #preemiefighter #preemieblog
Life after NICU 👼🏽✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Zoey was born at 23 weeks, 1 lb 5 oz. I went into early labor due to an extremely short cervical barrier- I was on progesterone but I got an infection from it and went into pre-term labor. I was hospitalized 4 days and was given steroids and meds to stop the contractions. I went home after being medically cleared and then right when I got home I started having contractions again! I went back to the hospital and Zoey was born less than a half hour later. I was in complete shock. She has been amazing- she spent 91 days in the NICU and went home 4 weeks before her due date. No complications. Went home at 4 pounds, on no meds, no monitors, nothing. We have been doing some physical therapy to help with torticollis and strength. Right now the only issue is that she's getting a helmet next week but that's pretty minor compared to what a lot of preemies go through! We are very lucky. She's truly a miracle!” 💕⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #perfectpreemie #preemiebabies #nicu #nicubabymiracle #preemiemom #preemiedad #nicugrad #preemiesupportandawareness #preemielove #preemiepower #toronto #preemielove #preemiecommunity #preemiefighter #preemieblog
We can’t go to the mall just yet, so we browsed the gift shop at the hospital 😄 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why are gift shops so expensive? $30 for a bean bag Minnie Mouse, ha... no thank you ✋🏽 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #RSV #coldandfluseason #stayawayfromus ❌ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #perfectpreemie #preemiebabies #nicu #nicubabymiracle #preemiemom #preemiedad #nicugrad #preemiesupportandawareness #preemielove #preemiepower #toronto #preemielove #preemiecommunity #preemiefighter #preemieblog
The last week at home has been soooo nice!!! Going back and forth to the nicu wasn’t super fun but thankfully our stay was relatively short. Isaac is wrapped in a blanket from his great Nana. She didn’t get to meet him here but she was able to know and rejoice in his coming life! #babyisaac #preemiefighter #survivingnotthriving
