Ima “functional” guy. I believe in training “movement and not muscles”. I believe that transfer of training must be the underlying goal of all exercise prescribed to athletes. But sometimes, bicep curls and abs are whats for dinner.
...some OH jumps for one of the QBs. 🦁💪💨
The most common error i see my pro day athletes make year in and year out is trying to force themselves to “stay low” during the initial steps of linear acceleration. Staying low during the initial steps of acceleration is not what leads to effective acceleration; it’s a product of it. A low projection angle is a consequence of effectively and efficiently applying force to the ground in a horizontal direction to drive the entire body forward, while enough vertical forces are applied to the ground to raise the center of mass and allow for proper lower body mechanics. Instead of focusing on learning how to maintain proximal position while imparting forces to the ground and executing proper front side swing leg mechanics to set up the next ground strike, athletes attempt to round their chest and head forward to force a “low” position and make themselves feel like they are closer to the ground. The result of this is that they’re unable to finish full extension of the back leg with full flexion of the swing leg. By forcing themselves so low to the ground they literally don’t have the time or appropriate leg action to strike the frontside leg down and back into the ground to propel the body forward on the second step. Instead, the frontside leg crashes onto the ground in front of the athlete’s hips with a much more vertical shin. This imparts vertical and breaking forces to the ground, and instead of projecting the athlete forward, pushes them straight up, defeating the entire purpose of staying low. I love using the single leg, band-resisted broad jump with two leg landing to reinforce proper acceleration angles, projection, and force application in the weight room. The athlete will quickly learn that in order to achieve greater distances, they can’t force themselves low to the ground. They must self-organize the appropriate ratio of horizontal and vertical force application to the ground to project out and up, and the result is an excellent acceleration angle. #sprint #broadjump #nflcombine #combineseason #power #acceleration #speed #speedkills #football #NFL #singleleg #push #project #athlete #training #performance #gainz #workout #fordakids #plyometrics
